The Fresno County Department of Public Health is accepting applications for a challenging and rewarding career opportunity as a Communicable Disease Specialist I. Incumbents in this position will perform a variety of clinical and community support tasks related to the education and testing of persons at risk of contracting communicable diseases; and performs related work as required.

The Communicable Disease Specialist classification series is primarily oriented to interviewing and counseling clients with communicable disease and their contacts, gathering information from clients, investigating cases of communicable disease for treatment, prevention and control purposes, conducting presentations, and providing education information.

Please note: The current vacancy requires bilingual skills in Spanish. However, the eligible list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies that do not require bilingual skills and for both extra-help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group II - Moderate Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require moderate physical effort using arms, legs, back, and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) 10-25 pounds, and occasionally over 25 pounds. Generally, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved.

Minimum Qualifications

OPTION 1:


Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in, Biology, Counseling, Nursing, Psychology, Public Health, or a closely related field that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.


OPTION 2:


Education: Completion of sixty (60) semester units of coursework that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system. At least fifteen (15) of the required semester units must be in Biology, Counseling, Nursing, Psychology, Public Health, or a closely related field.


Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience in the control and prevention of communicable diseases, which included the preparation and presentation of health information to the public.


In addition to the options listed above, the following is required:


License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.


In addition to the options listed above, the following may be required:


Other: Pursuant to California Business and Professions Code 1246 incumbents may be required to complete a department approved phlebotomy course.


Pursuant to California Health and Safety Code 120917 incumbents may be required to obtain certification by the State of California, Department of Public Health, Office of AIDS as a HIV Counselor.


Pursuant to California Health and Safety Code 121360.5 incumbents may be required to obtain certification to perform tuberculin skin tests.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for the process listed below:

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.

Communicable Disease Specialist I applicants must qualify under one (1) of the options listed below. Please indicate which option you qualify under:
  • I possess a bachelor's degree in Biology, Counseling, Nursing, Psychology, Public Health, or a closely related field that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.
