Description

Under general supervision, to operate a City passenger car or van for the demand-response service.

Examples of Duties

Perform light vehicle maintenance, as required; to assist elderly and disabled riders; and to perform related work as required.
Typical Qualifications

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a good driving record;
  • Possession of a current standard First Aid Certificate within thirty (30) days of hire;
  • Possession of a current standard CPR Certificate within thirty (30) days of hire.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
  • Education sufficient to ensure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of licensed experience in the operation of motor vehicles.
Desirable Experience:
  • One (1) year of work experience driving involving the transportation of passengers or the delivery of goods.
OR
  • One (1) year of experience assisting the elderly and/or disabled.
OR
  • Six (6) months of work experience with a transit agency or department.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting citizens.
Ability to:
  • Safely operate a public transit vehicle;
  • Be comfortable with physical limitations of the aged and disabled;
  • Communicate with citizens having oral and auditory disabilities;
  • Carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Be physically able to lift, carry and/or push 75 pounds on a regular basis;
  • Operate a mobile radio for the purpose of receiving and dispatching calls for service.
Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Strength: Medium work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 75 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds;
  • Physical activities include: Bending, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, up to and including the possibility of climbing a ladder for cleaning/defogging, assisting elderly and disabled riders entering and exiting vehicles, pushing wheelchair riders to/from their home/destination as needed, securing wheelchairs in vehicles and carrying in multiple bags of groceries/items if necessary.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position at the time of application submission. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Candidates will be required to obtain standard First Aid and CPR certifications at their expense. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen and a background investigation. Possession of a valid California driver's license and good driving record will be required prior to hire. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
